When birth photography isn’t for everyone, there is still a beautiful story to capture. When first time parents Ben and Marnie contacted me, we talked about creating a session to remember…. I love doing this with the pregnancy sessions in particular. With so much anticipation and love, there is just so much to smile about! Selecting the best maternity images, adding them to the beautiful photographs taken during an at-home newborn session, and including some beautiful words from mum and dad is what I love. The album created is really something special – to keep, to reflect on and to pass along when the time comes!
Briony & Ben are a down to earth couple and a lot of fun to work with! And their gorgeous little daughter Penelope was just adorable. It was such a pleasure to document this special time in their lives with 2 simple sessions. The maternity shoot was conducted in home as a lifestyle session however there was a degree of posing involved. For the newborn session, Penelope and her parents graced my studio for an intimate experience filled with warmth and white noise…
Dear Chandra and Ben,
Thank you for inviting me into your home to capture this unique and special time for the two of you. Expecting your first child is a momentous occasion as you prepare for the next chapter in life. Witnessing your closeness, love and anticipation was a blessing and joy for me and I hope you are pleased with the images I’ve captured. This is how I see you – beautiful, glowing, trusting. I wish you both a beautiful birth experience and as many joyful moments with your new baby as there are stars in the night sky.
Thank you to my beautiful model Kellie and her fun family.
Maternity shoot at Grange Beach, South Australia on the 15th April 2013.
There’s something wonderful about the spontaneity of working as a birth photographer. I think because I’ve always been a planner, someone who likes to know what’s going to happen, when, how, etc. I’ve learnt to enjoy confronting that aspect of my nature. The payoff is that I’m learning, developing and creating so much more that I could before.
Cool but what does that have to do with this shoot? Well, this shoot is the result of spontaneity – a gorgeously pregnant and spontaneous birth client and a last minute casting call for a very specific maternity shoot!
All I was after was one shot – something that represented the beauty of pregnancy, how the body and spirit glow from within, withstanding the elements around to nurture new life.
The cool part about this shoot was how the lack of client expectation and complete trust in me made this shoot a greater success than I could have hoped. There was no pressure, it flowed, there were many great moments because there was no stress, no projecting, just working with the light to get the image I had in my mind.
This calmness flowed on too, evident at the birth of this beautiful baby who is here nurtured inside his gorgeous mother’s womb.
This shoot was a blessing. I hope you enjoy the images also.
